Traditional Music Seminars for Leaving / Junior Cert Students

The Coleman School of Music is continuing its programme for Leaving/Junior Cert Students with a one day course that can be arranged on a date to suit your school. This course covers all aspects of traditional music from its historical background, regional styles and ornamentation on the contemporary music of today.

The programme consists of lectures followed by practical demonstrations where students can examine, play and discuss the main instruments of traditional music.

Students also have free access to our new state of the art exhibition area with audio-visual, interactive kiosks and traditional music archive. The day ends on a lighter note with a music session/céilí dancing plus an invitation to any musicians in the school group to give a live performance!

Course Content

  • Foundation instruments of pipes, fiddle and flute. Video presentation of each with reference to background, technique, ornamentation etc.

  • The harp - a detailed analysis of its importance in Irish music plus an exploration of regional styles and the factors that distinguish them.

  • Sean Nós singing plus video presentation and discussion on accordion, concertina, banjo etc. with an in-depth look at the role of accompaniment in Irish music.

  • A look at the evolution of Irish music over the past few decades with examples of the many different strands of Irish music on the contemporary scene.

  • Course fee is €20.00 per student
